As our school year began we've read tons of stories together to bring back the love of reading in a classroom through distance learning. We began using the story "The Color Monster" the first week of school to help students feel comfortable with sharing their emotions, and learn how to sort through some tough emotions we experience through virtual learning. Our class created mood charts based on colors that represent an emotion to each child.
Creating their own and not forcing every child to make the same mood chart, has honestly helped us get to know one another better, and discover how we can help each other even through a zoom class! Stories help children make connections to the real world, and using them to for social emotional learning has shown our class how we can improve communication, learn strategies to move from negative feelings to positive ones, and feel greater comfortability in a virtual setting with new classmates. Take a look at one child's chart!
